Hardknott Pass
One of the steepest and most dramatic roads in England.
Hardknott Pass is one of the most challenging and spectacular roads in England. The narrow route twists sharply through the western fells of the Lake District, climbing steeply between rocky slopes and open mountain views. Hairpin bends, sudden gradients and wide skies make it feel far more remote than its short length suggests. It’s the kind of road that turns a simple drive into an adventure.
Expect very steep gradients and tight hairpins — take it slowly and use low gears on both the climb and descent. Visibility can change quickly with mountain weather. Stop at the Roman Hardknott Fort nearby for one of the best views across Eskdale.
Follow what interests you. The small detours often become the best parts of the journey.
